The double degree you will obtain from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the National School of Health - Carlos III Institute of Health will qualify you to work as a public health professional in national and international public administrations. In addition, the Diploma of Specialisation in Public Health has academic continuity in the master’s degree in public health organised by the UPF and UAB universities, with which it is closely linked.

Descripció llarga (part visible)

The Specialization Diploma in Public Health, created in collaboration with the Agencia de Salud Pública de Catalunya and the Agencia de Salud Pública de Barcelona, aims to provide health professionals with skills in the basic disciplines of Public Health and to introduce them to the essential tools used for the interpretation, control and evaluation of health problems.

Descripció llarga (mostrar més)

The main objective of the programme is to provide the basic knowledge and competences necessary for public health professionals, through public administrations or other citizen services, to be able to develop more effectively their role in the field of health promotion and protection, surveillance, control and prevention of diseases and their risk factors in the population, considering the socio-political and economic context of their environment.

For this reason, the Specialisation Diploma in Public Health focuses on identifying the key concepts and tools for understanding what public health is, how it is structured and what functions and skills professionals who want to work in this field need to develop, starting with the definition of public health and the related institutions, as well as the basic tools for understanding, monitoring and analysing the health of the population and the factors that determine it. Practical elements for planning, developing and evaluating community interventions are also introduced.

Finally, the development and defence of a research project is proposed as the culmination of the programme.

The specific objectives of the Specialisation Diploma in Public Health are as follows:

  • To acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge of the nature of public health and its capacity to transform societies by providing progress and well-being, but also by posing new challenges from an ethical perspective.
  • To analyse the main priorities and major current problems facing public health.
  • To reflect on the relationships between the different actors involved in the development of public health.
  • To learn about the main professional areas in which public health is developed, how they have evolved in recent decades and what the prospects for future development are.
  • Gain a comparative view of the public health landscape in different contexts, emphasising those examples of good and bad practice that have been decisive in the evolution of the profession.
  • Acquire the practical skills necessary for the professional practice of public health.
  • Acquire the knowledge and practical experience necessary to develop professional and research projects in the field of public health, integrating both theoretical and practical knowledge.
  • Develop and defend a specific research project, necessary to obtain accreditation by the National School of Health and the UPF-BSM.

In this way, throughout the program you will learn to identify the main health problems of the population and their determinants, and you will approach them from a holistic and professional viewpoint. You will learn the resources to make health promotion and disease and health problem control and prevention policies more effective, you will learn to understand their determinants and highlight inequalities in the health of the population. You will gain experience and know how to respond to alerts, outbreaks and emergencies. You will also acquire the basic skills to carry out epidemiological research and discover how to promote community health from a health and equity perspective.
